The need for wearable technology

Everyone is familiar with the concept of technology these days since that is what has been trending for the past two years especially. But have you ever heard about wearable technology, especially for an educational institution? Like most other gadget revolutions, wearable technology has also developed over the years and come a long way, finally finding its permanent grounds in schools, colleges, and universities too.

Meaning of wearable technology

A wearable technology, in general terms, means any electronic device which can be worn by people. The required feature is portability, making it easy to wear and carry around. Let us not confuse this with a mobile phone because it is only a portable electronic device and not wearable. However, if you own a smartwatch that you can wear on your wrist, that could be turned into wearable technology.

Some examples of wearable technology in an institution could include owning a swiping card for checking into the attendance management software every morning. Students and teachers have cards that they swipe for counting in that day’s attendance. It reduces a lot of effort and time for class teachers. They can wear these cards as identity cards because it shows all necessary student data according to the school information management system.

Other common examples of wearable technologies are- smart watches that have features of the school system, accessories and gadgets which are personalized to be useful at school, and so on.

But how has it changed over the years and why is it helpful in an institution remains an important question. To answer these questions, we need to first understand the importance of it enhancing the quality of education for students.

Hands-free mode

Having a technology that students can wear gives them the convenience of agility. When they have a pair of free hands ready, they can use the gadget as well as enjoy access to other devices or materials in front of them easily without the digital barrier.

Student engagement

Students have to engage in a classroom, with the teacher first, and classmates second. These engagements usually happen during the question-answer sessions, or group discussion sessions organized mostly for revision classes. Besides the people, they are also engaging with the new technological tools installed in modern-day smart classes. If these technological advances are wearable, every student can learn at their own pace and avoid instances of miscommunication because they are personally looking over every activity.

Moreover, they can also enjoy the thrill of using a newfound technology to learn, improving their learning experience through practical illustrations and other holistic learning approaches.

Parental participation

Parents always try to be a part of their student’s education, mostly in their early years of schooling. This is a time when they need the most attention as it happens to be their developing stage in life. With the ease of wearable technology, Good mother can easily be a part of their learning experience. They would be able to track the location of their children, whether they reached school in time, and what time they would be leaving school for home. Through other parts of technological innovations, they can also regularly keep in touch with the teachers to inquire about their child’s learning environment, and enhance it in any way possible.

Conclusion

There are some drawbacks or challenges to wearable technology too. The first is that we are a developing nation, and the priority of most educational institutions is to focus on students and ensure they are all treated equally. Knowing this, they have to let go of extremely advanced technological devices because a majority of the population would either not be able to afford them in the long run or use it conveniently due to gaps in technological knowledge. Yet if the school offers to train them and also takes up the responsibility of providing wearable technology, the literacy rate of the nation could be pushed a little forward.

Although we started using wearable technology in institutions for benefit of students, we can conclude that it is also extremely useful to teachers. As long as they learn to carefully run these systems, and use them regularly, it’s can save a lot of their time which could be directed towards focusing on student progress.
